What is a Robots.txt File?

A `robots.txt` file is a powerful tool that tells search engine crawlers (like Googlebot) which pages or files on your site they can or cannot request. It's a fundamental part of technical SEO that gives you control over how search engines interact with your website.

How to Use the Generator:

  • 1. Set Default Rules: The generator starts with a default rule. You can set the user-agent (e.g., '*' for all bots, or 'Googlebot' for a specific one) and the path to disallow (e.g., `/admin/` to block your admin area).
  • 2. Add More Rules: Click "Add Rule" to create more specific instructions for different bots or different directories you want to block.
  • 3. Add Sitemap: Optionally, add the full URL to your sitemap.xml file. This is a best practice that helps search engines discover all the pages you want them to index.
  • 4. Download or Copy: Once configured, you can download the `robots.txt` file directly or copy its contents to your clipboard. Upload this file to the root directory of your website (e.g., `https://yourdomain.com/robots.txt`).

Why is Robots.txt Important?

A well-configured `robots.txt` file helps you manage your "crawl budget." By preventing bots from crawling unimportant or duplicate pages (like internal search results or admin pages), you ensure they spend their time indexing your most valuable content. This can lead to better and faster indexing of your key pages.
